What this test measures

This is a rapid screen for bacterial activity in your water — the kind of contamination you can’t see, taste or smell. It’s the check that matters most on private supplies, after floods or plumbing work, and for hot tubs that have sat unused.

The UK standard

UK drinking water regulations require zero E. coli and enterococci in every 100 ml — there is no acceptable amount of these bacteria in drinking water. Mains supplies are disinfected and monitored constantly; private supplies are your own responsibility, which is why routine screening earns its keep.

Reading your test

Follow the step-by-step instructions in your pack and wait the full time stated before reading the colour change. The result tells you whether bacterial activity was detected in your sample — a screening result, not a certified lab count.

What to do next

• A positive screen is a prompt, not a panic: re-test with a fresh sample first, taking care not to touch the inside of the vial.
• While you investigate a positive drinking water result, boil water before drinking or use bottled water as a precaution.
• On a private supply, ask your council’s environmental health team to arrange accredited lab testing — that’s the definitive answer.
• On a mains supply, report your concern to your water supplier.
• Hot tub positive? Drain, clean, refill and re-dose sanitiser before using it again.
